What is Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations and how it relates to Dynamics AX?
Today, Microsoft is undoubtedly one of the most technologically advanced companies in the world, which invests huge amounts of money in the development of business management solutions: it constantly improves functionality, conforms applications to modern terms of business management, etc.
All these processes are accompanied by a large-scale rebranding of software products, which customers often do not have time to track, and therefore the question: “What is Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations (Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management) and how does it relate to Dynamics AX? ” oddly enough, it remains relevant. Although the answer is simple: Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations – is the name of the latest version of the ERP system – Dynamics AX.
Below I will go more into details about how the rebranding has occurred historically and will share information about which applications are now part of the Dynamics 365 product line.
Dynamics AX (AXAPTA) is a business management software from Microsoft (the first version was released to the market in 1998 under the name IBM Axapta). This is an ERP system that covers such areas of activity as financial management, warehouse logistics, production management, inventory management, project management, service management, personnel management, CRM (sales and marketing management), business intelligence, etc.

The “Dynamics” prefix appeared in 2006, when the next version of the Dynamics AX 4.0 system was released. It is worth noting that, in general, the Dynamics suite consisted of three products: Dynamics NAV, Dynamics AX and Dynamics CRM.
In November 2016, Microsoft undertook a large-scale rebranding of the Dynamics suite, combining all existing applications that can be useful for business (not only ERP and CRM solutions) into a product line under the general name – Dynamics 365.
At the same time, some of the products were renamed. For example: the latest version of the Microsoft Dynamics AX solution became – Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Dynamics CRM – Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement, and Dynamics NAV evolved into Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Over time, some of the functions of these software products have been separated into standalone applications, so Customers who use Dynamics 365 have the opportunity to use only the functionality that the business needs at the moment, and, if necessary, expand and supplement it with new Dynamics 365 solutions that are easy integrate with each other.
