Microsoft Dynamics 365 Marketing evolution: how not to be confused with an application name?

It is not black and white when choosing a solution to automate the work of the marketing department. We are confronted with a bunch of names when looking for marketing solutions from Microsoft: Dynamics 365 Marketing, Real-Time Marketing (RTM), OBM, Customer Insights – Journeys. How can a potential customer find out which solution is relevant today?

In this article we’ll look at the evolution of Dynamics 365 Marketing and clarify what its current name is.

April 2018 – Microsoft launched a marketing automation solution Dynamics 365 for Marketing. This solution becomes a part of the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement platform: Dynamics 365 SalesDynamics 365 Customer Serviceand Dynamics 365 Field Service.

2021 – Real-time marketing module was launched as a part of Dynamics 365 Marketing. Since that time all previous Dynamics 365 Marketing functionality moved to the Outbound Marketing module. The new module Real-time Marketing (RTM) was in the Marketing area. Both modules are parts of Dynamics 365 Marketing and have been in rapid development ever since.

September 2023 – the new Dynamics 365 Customer Insights offering combines the standalone Dynamics 365 Customer Insights and Dynamics 365 Marketing apps into a single offering. The new Customer Insights offering includes both the Customer Insights – Journeys (formerly Dynamics 365 Marketing) and Customer Insights – Data (formerly the standalone Customer Insights) applications (See license pricing). New Customer Insights – Journeys customers receive real-time journeys features only. Outbound Marketing will no longer be updated.

After September 1, 2023, existing customers can remain and renew on the standalone licensing model for another contractual cycle. This renewal must be made during the transitional offer window that will run through September 1, 2024, with a final contract maturity date that can’t extend beyond September 1, 2027. At the end of the renewed contractual period, customers will need to transition to the new Customer Insights licensing.

In conclusion, the verified name for the Marketing solution from Microsoft is Dynamics 365 Customer Insights – Journeys.
